Other than being famous for being the Land of a Thousand Smiles, the Thais are also well known for creating meaningful AND memorable TV ads that will have you in tears from too much laughing or crying. That’s because Thai marketers have always understood that the way to your customers’ minds start from working your way into their emotions. More specifically, their hearts.
So, if you’re looking for some inspiration for your next ad, or even if you are looking to create ads that your audience wouldn’t dread, here’s 6 ads that will kick start your journey into viral Thai marketing.
Sanook!
1. A Love Story — That’s Way Better Than Twilight!
With millions of views since it was shown nearly two decades ago, this is one of the shortest love story that still sells, twenty years on. Follow the story of two star crossed lovers as they traverse the dangerous terrain to meet up, as they follow their dreams of a better future with each other.
Only for all of it to be cut short. Why? Watch the video to find out:
2. A Pandemic — Long Before COVID 19 Was In Our Collective Consciousness
An arrogant termite who spits in the face of death, or does he? And why would a brand want to show that their product isn’t all that effective against termites (which is what their customers buy them for)?
Confused? So were we at the start, but it all makes sense after a while, and gets you remembering the product: Chaindrite.
3. A Bank Robbery Gone Wrong — Swimmingly Wrong
This one isn’t for the faint of heart, definitely don’t watch this if you’re on your lunch break or if you’re having a snack in the middle of the work day. Otherwise, your boss will be shouting at you in a bit. We’re totally not kidding.
A great idea for a spectacle shop, an optometrist or even a language school, this combines surprise with disgust. Thread lightly, so as not to turn off your customers.
4. Who’s This Hero? Doing Things for Others Without Reward.
Or is there a reward in the end?
Insurance is a tough thing to sell, especially when you pay and pay and pay, but don’t really get anything until the end. But our hero does good deeds for others on the daily with no expectation of any rewards. So why does this unknown, unfamous, unassuming man do what he does? And why are we all in tears at this hero? It’s more than surprising, isn’t it?
5. Giving — A Real Tear Jerker
Try watching this short story without any feelings, I dare you. This was created more than a decade ago by Director Thanonchai Sornsriwichai for a Thai phone company called True Move, and it was meant to inspire people to generosity. Of course, being a commercial, it ties back to the phone company in the end, but it is truly a memorable tear jerker.
6. There’s No Perfect Father, But A Father Will Love Perfectly
Another huge tear jerker from an insurance company about the struggles of the daughter of a deaf and mute man. While it follows the trope of an “outsider” being bullied in school, and some of the frustrations of being a victim of school bullying, in a few short minutes it also shows the love of a father who cannot communicate the same way we do. Again, another great story that’s created by Thai Life Insurance.
